What You Need To Know Befor Selecting A Guinea Pig Cage

Choosing the right Guinea Pig Cage for your guinea/s is one of the most important decisions that you will make, considering the guinea will spend most of their lives inside the cage you choose. Before you decide on a cage there are a few questions you need to ask yourself first;

Will the cage be for one, two or more guinea pigs? Depending on how many guinea pigs you will have, will decide on the size of the cage you need to get. Small Guinea Pig Cages are ok for one guinea, but if you intend on having several you will need a Large Guinea Pig Cage or maybe several cages.

Will you be keeping you guineas indoor or outdoors? This answer will also affect the type of cage or hutch you will need to get. Some cages are only suitable for indoors and others for outdoors, although there are a few cages and hutches that will be ok for both.

What is the climate in your region? Does your region have extreme weather conditions? For example; very cold winters with snow and ice. Then you may need two cages if you would like to keep them outdoors. This is a good idea anyways because you can keep your guinea outdoors during the warmer months and indoors through the winter.

How much do you won't to send on a guinea pig cage or hutch? You budget will determine this. You will find small guinea cages for under $25 or if you want to spoil you guinea, there a two-story cage that cost up to $150. If you can only afford a small cage then you should not get more than one guinea pig.

Once you have answered these questions you are ready to shop around for a cage suitable not only for you but also for your guinea pigs. You may even decide to build the cage yourself. Have a look around our website to get a good idea on the type of cages and hutches that are available on the market. We also provide links to the cheapest prices online with free shipping.

F.A.Q

My Guinea Pig Chirped....Like a bird!

"Chirping" is a very unusual and rare sound that guinea pigs make. Unfortunately, no one really knows what it means.

Why does my Guinea Pig sneeze?

Guinea Pigs sneeze for a number of reasons, but the most commen is that they have a tickle on their nose. Another reason is that they might be sick and have a cold. You can tell this by - runny nose, watering eyes and a wet bottem. If this is the case take him to the vet as soon as possible.

My Guinea Pig is running around his house spraying pee everywhere?

When Guinea Pigs do this they are marking their territory, it just their way of scent marking and saying 'this area is mine'.

How come everythime my Guinea Pig cleanes it's self white snuff comes out of it's eyes?
Don't worry about this, this is just a small liquid substance that is stored in a pocket in side their eye socket. Just this of this as 'Guinea Pig Eye Cleaner'. How ever if you are concerned take your Guinea Pig to the vet as it may be eye discharge.

Is it normal for my Guinea Pig to have a scabby nose?
No, there are several reasons why the Guinea Pig's nose is abit scabby or dry. Firstly, they could have a cold and this is just dry 'discharge' other reasons may be because she or he has mites, mites causes skin loss and scabbyness to soft areas to a Guinea Pig's body, such as nose, eye sockets and ears. If this is so, get some 'Neem Oil' and 'Veggie Oil' and mix it together and smooth it all over the Guinea Pig, making sure to get none of the liquid in their eyes or ears. If this doesn't worl then take them to the vet.

How can I tell if my Guinea Pig has mites?
They way to tell if a Guinea Pig has mites or not, it quite easy. First check - get the fur and part it so you can see the skin, do this is several places near the back, neck and stomach. You can tell if they have mites or other parasites because you will either see them moving around. Mites range from orange to clear. And also you can see fur comming apart from the skin. If they have mites you will also see intense loss of hair loss and scabbyness around soft areas. If they do have mites get some Neem oil and Veggie Oil and rub it into their fur, leave to dry them wash out when you see hair groth.

My Guinea Pig won't eat!
Not eating in Guinea Pigs means that hey are sick, either they have a mouth sore(teeth, gums) or they have a stomach problem, like a bug. This can be from eating the wrong type of food - such as a weed from out side, that they may have mistaken as grass. If this is the case, take them to the vet as soon as possible, that will give your Guinea Pig madicine - but remember never let the vet give your Guinea Pig a needle, some medicines are poisonous to Guinea Pigs and will make them ever more I'll which can lead to death. However don't just take your Guinea Pig after one day of it not eating - the stress of a vet picking up a Guinea Pig and prodding it with cold objects will stress it out, and cause it's illness to even get worse.

Is it okay if my Guinea Pig eats a tomato plant's leaves?
No! Tomato plant is extreamly poisonous to Guinea Pigs, the only part they can eat is the actual fruit itself. If they do happen to eat the stem or leaves, take them to the vet straight away, as this is life-thretning.

Why does my Guinea Pig eat it's own poop?
Guinea Pig's eat their own poop because it holds some form of vitimins, although it is quite rare for a Guinea Pig to eat it own dropping some Guinea Pig's will eat it so, don't worry if your's doesn't.

I can't get Timmothy Hay in my area, what else can I use?
Although Timmothy Hay is the best thing to use as Guinea Pig bedding, there are others you can use. And they don't cost as much! There are all sorts of different hays and bedding that you can use - just remember to never use lawn clippings as they can contain all sorts of plants that your Guinea Pig can't eat. The sorts of bedding are things like 'Care Fresh' bedding, which can come in lots of colours and does not produce any dust which would make your Guinea Pig sick. When buying Guinea Pig bedding it is a good thing to know that make sure you can bedding that is sutible for Guinea Pigs and doesn't give of dust or strong smells.

Can I use towels as bedding for my Guinea Pig Cage?
Yes, although not as good as bedding - towels will provide soft bedding on your Guinea Pig's stomach and skin. Towels are great because the Guinea Pig can hide under it and make little beds. Don't worry if your Guinea Pig starts chweing at the cotton because they don't actually eat any. Another good thing is that when they are dirsty you can just wash the towels - or even better, throw them out.

How can I tell if my Guinea Pig is a boy or a girl?
To tell the difference between a boy and a girl Guinea Pig please click this link.

How do you know if a Guinea Pig is happy?

Guinea Pig make a laughing sound to express their happiness, it sound abit like a high mumble, you can here this when a Guinea Pig is eating, being patted or with other Guinea Pigs. They will also bounce or 'popcorn' around the place when they are playing or excited. This is a sort of jump and flick in the air.

BRUSHING

Daily brushing with a soft baby brush will help remove some of the loose hair. Daily brushing is very important for long haired cavies, as they can their fur may become tangled in their feet.

BATHING

Should I bath my Guinea Pig? Possibly the most asked quesion about Guinea pig care. And the answer is yes, but only when the need to be bathed. Now, you can't just go putting any random soap on a Guinea Pig because their skin is extreamly soft, which means they will need special shampoos. A shampoo formulated especially for small animals will help avoid drying their skin. Use a shallow bowl of warm water, rinse, and dry thoroughly to avoid chills before returning them to their home. Avoid getting water in their ears.

Shampoos:
Bunny Bath by Four Paws is a nice smelling shampoo which can be used on Guinea Pigs.
Hylyt Hypoallergenic Shampoo is a soap free product excellent for use on sensitive skin.

Note: If your pet is extremely itchy, is shedding more than normal, or has a lot of dandruff, a parasite or fungal infection are the most likely causes. None of the shampoos mentioned here are designed to treat these problems though Hylyt and Epi-Soothe may temporarily relieve some of the pain. Read mange mites and fungus to find out how important it is to promptly treat these conditions.

Now you know all about what shampoo to use on a Guinea Pig, here is a step by step guide on "How to bath your Guinea Pig."

1. Clean a sink or large bowl and fill it up about three inch deep with warm water. Depending on the size of the Guinea Pig.

3. Then slowly lower your Guinea Pig into the bucket or tub or water. Making sure no water gets in their ears or nose.

4. Take the Guinea Pig and place it on the ground Apply soap to the body and rub it smoothly in making sure to get any tangled fur or dirt out of the fur.

Caring For Your New Guinea Pig

Guinea Pig Health and Care Page 2.

Handling and Holding your Guinea Pig

Guinea Pigs are small, delicate animals and can eaisly be hurt. So being able to hold a Guinea Pig knowing that they are free from becomming hurt is a good thing to know. Here are some tips on "How to Hold a Guinea Pig"

WARNING: For the safety of a Guinea Pig I would suggest NOT letting a child under the age of 4 hold a Guinea Pig, as young children will try and squeeze the Guinea Pig to hold it in place if it moves and may be quite rough to the Guinea Pig thinking it is a doll or toy and swing it around. Many Guinea Pigs have been injured or even been killed like this. Care is also needed when removing them from the Guinea Pig Cage.

1. When the Guinea Pig is in it's cage and you want to pick it up, this is how you should do it: Get your right (or left) hand and hold the "bum" of the Guinea Pig, with your spare hand place your index fonger and pointer finger under the Guinea Pigs frount arms.

2.Slowly lift the Guinea Pig out of it's cage. Then place it next to you next supporting it's bottem and holding it tight enough so that s/he can still move.

Introducing Another Guinea Pig

Ok, so you've just brought home a new Guinea Pig as a friend for your Guinea Pig...It isn't as simple as you think it could be. Here's how to stop illness, pregnacy and fighting.

Quarantine Period

If you have brought two guinea pigs home from the same place, then there is no need to quarantine them for a couple of weeks, unless they are going to be joining your existing guinea pigs. If you have brought a guinea pig home to be introduced to your existing guinea pig or herd, you need to quarantine the new guinea pig for at least two weeks. A few guinea pig illnesses can incubate for a while, so a quarantine period of two weeks will allow enough time for an illness to show itself. Keep the newcomer in another room, away from your other guinea pigs.

Sexing guinea pigs
Of course before you attempt to introduce guinea pigs to each other, you need to be sure 100% that you know the sex of your guinea pigs. Please don't rely on pet shops, many pet shops do get the gender wrong. Some even allow mixed sexes to interact and live together so some sows may already be pregnant. Here's how to tell the difference between female and male Guinea Pig, a sow's (female)is genrally in the shape of a "Y". Boys, are usally in the shape of a "Y" too, how ever at the top there will be a "pimple" or lump. Also by pressing next to the "bum" of the male Guinea Pig a lump will come out.

Reason Why Guinea Pigs Need a Cage Mate
In the wild, guinea pigs live in herds, consisting of usually one dominant adult male, several females and their babies. Guinea Pigs would much rather live as a pair or a herd, they feel that there is safety in numbers. They also enjoy the company of their own kind, communicating and interacting with each other. Both males and females have a strict dominance ranking. The domestic Guinea Pigs act in much the same way as wild guinea pigs.

There are also advantages for you as a guinea pig owner. You will get to see so many different kinds of behaviour when they interact with each other. Some behaviour just wouldn't be seen with a lone guinea pig. Playing 'following the leader' tug of war with their vegetables, grooming each other, sniffing, so much more that a lone guinea pig just wouldn't be able to do. One statement that crops up is "my guinea pig won't bond with me if they have a cage mate". This just isn't true. As long as your gentle and caring towards your guinea pigs, they will bond with you. You may also notice that your guinea pig will become more confident and relaxed so that is an added bonus for you and your Guinea Pig.
